How fast can I really connect to my Azure resources spread across different regions? How can I test download and upload speeds for my resources in the Azure cloud? How do I find the region of an Azure resource based on its IP address? Questions like these often come to mind while working with Azure or any cloud service.

Microsoft Azure makes this possible through https://www.azurespeed.com/

Checking latency between an Azure region and my IP

AzureSpeed.Com will let you select Azure Regions and show you the latency for all the regions from your current location based on your IP address. As shown in the screenshot below I have selected 2 regions “Australia East” and “Australia SouthEast”. AzureSpeed.Com tests latency between my IP address and the selected regions. This is a real-time latency test.

I connected to Los Angeles location using a VPN service and the latency from Los Angeles to Australia region changed to the following

You can use AzureSpeed.Com to check latency between two regions. Microsoft makes the following table available which indicates latency between Azure regions

Azure Data Center IP addresses

This is one of the most interesting feature that was very helpful for me while working with Azure resources. I needed a complete list of IP addresses for a region for a very specific security and networking related requirement and AzureSpeed.Com readily had this most updated list

There is another cool website https://azurespeedtest.azurewebsites.net/

I found it pretty helpful and has a great graphical interface showing the region latency. It uses a blog service in different Azure Data center to measure the latency.

Changes in Azure

You may want to check https://azurecharts.com/ This website shows the Azure heat map. Not exactly for latency or resource speed but it can be really helpful when you want to discover changes that are happening in Azure.

The website highlights the changes happening to each Azure resource. Hovering the mouse over an item shows quick tips on how many changes were made related to the resource type. Example

I clicked on the first item under compute i.e. “Virtual machines” and it to shows the RSS feed for the changes that happened in Azure related to the virtual machines.
